| GREG HARRIS SELECTED YOUTH COORDINATOR |
September 02, 2010 Greg Harris has been selected to oversee the Carolina Cubs youth program consisting of teams in the 14, 13 and 12 year old age groups. Greg originally from Greensboro, NC was drafted by the San Diego Padres out of Elon University in the 10th round of the 1985 amateur draft. He pitched in the Major Leagues from 1988 through 1995 with the San Diego Padres , Colorado Rockies, and Minnesota Twins. Primarily a relief pitcher in his early days with the Padres, he transitioned into the starting rotation in 1991. His career 2.95 ERA with the Padres is still one of the best ERA's in team history.
On Monday, September 6, 2010 the Cubs will be holding tryouts at Holly Springs High School from 3:00PM until 6:00PM. Players trying out will need to go to the "Contact Us" section of this website and complete the "Prospect Form" and submit to the Cubs Staff.

| BRIAN TAYLOR, HARNETT CENTRAL STAR COMMITS TO NC STATE UNIVERSITY |
August 28, 2010 Brian Taylor, 2011 outfielder/pitcher from Harnett Central has decided to play for Coach Elliott Avent and the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The 6'3", 205 pound Taylor is the top three-sport athlete in the state and was the 2009-2010 News & Observer High School Male Athlete of the Year. He passed for more than 2,000 yards and rushed for another 1,000 in leading the Trojans to the state 4A championship game. He started in basketball and averaged 17 points per game and during the spring he was selected the Greater Neuse River 4A Baseball Player of the Year. He is a quiet, hard working young man that leads by example. NC State is getting a athletic, versatile athletic that can get it done in the outfield and on the mound. He pitches consistently in upper 80's with his fastball, and has good command of his curve and change-up. At the plate he helped the Trojans offensively with a .480 batting average, 10 HR's and 32 RBI's. On the mound he was 6-1 with an ERA of 0.85. Brian not only excels on the field, he carries a 4.6 GPA in the classroom. During the summer he helped the Cubs 16U Blue Team bring home the 16U Impact World Series Championship and finish National Runner-Ups in the 16U World Wood Bat Tournament. | HEATH BOWERS, HARNETT CENTRAL STAR VERBALS TO CAMPBELL |
August 10, 2010 Heath Bowers, 2011 right-handed pitcher/first baseman from Harnett Central has announced that he will play his college baseball for Coach Greg Goff and the Campbell University Fighting Camels. Heath has impressed the Campbell staff with his mental toughness, make-up and mound presence. He pitches consistently in the upper 80's with his fastball, has good command of both his curve and changeup, allowing him to throw all three pitches on any count. As a junior he posted a 6-3 mark with 68 strikeouts in 47 innings and fashioned a 2.19 ERA. At the plate he led the Trojans offensively with a .607 batting average, 4 HR and 23 RBI's. During the summer of 2010 he helped the Cubs 16U Blue team bring home the 16U Impact World Series Championship and finish National Runner-ups in the 16U World Wood Bat Tournament in Marietta, Ga. | SCOTT JOHNSON, HOGGARD STAR VERBALS TO GARDNER-WEBB |
August 09, 2010 Scott Johnson, 2011 shortstop from John T. Hoggard has verbally committed to play his college baseball for Coach Rusty Stroupe and the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. He is a quiet, hard working young man that excels both on the diamond and in the classroom. This slick fielding infielder posseses soft hands, plus arm strength, and good feet which should make him a very exciting prospects for the Bulldogs in the future. At the plate he can help in several ways, with 6.9 speed he could project as a 1 or 2 hole hitter because of his ability to handle the bat and hit to all fields. As he continues to grow he could be move to the middle of the lineup and be asked to provide punch in the order and drive in runs. During the spring of 2009 he helped the Vikings to a 21-5 season and advanced to the 4th round of the 4A State Playoffs. As a catalyst for the Vikings he batted .438, with 6 homeruns and 33 RBI's. Scott not only excels on the field , he has been inducted into the National Honor Society at Hoggard, and carries a 4.45 GPA in the classroom. | KYLE BYRD, HOLLY SPRINGS STAR VERBALS TO UNC ASHEVILLE |
August 08, 2010 Kyle Byrd, 2011 outfielder from Holly Springs has decided to play collegeiately for Coach Tom Smith and the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. Coach Smith will be getting a fleet-footed outfielder with great instincts/reads on balls and has the speed to run balls down in the gap. He projects as a 1 or 2 hole hitter with 6.9 speed and will be able to swipe a few bases for the Bulldogs. During the spring of 2010 he helped his Hawks to the third round of the 4A State Playoffs. Slowed by injuries in the spring of 2010 he managed to bat .370, scored 19 runs, and had an on-base percentage of .502. As a sophomore he help the Hawks to a 19-4 record as he batted a school record .487, scored 30 runs, had 12 stolen bases, conference record 5 triples, 19 RBI's and only 4 K's in 78 at bats. The Cubs family would like to congratulate Kyle and his family on his decision. August 03, 2010 Congratulations to Rookie Davis for being selected to play in the 2010 Under Armour All-America Baseball Game. The game will be played on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. Under Armour and Baseball Factory have selected 36 of the nation's top high school baseball players to participate in this years event. Rookie will play for the National team and was selected as a pitcher/first baseman. Players are nominated by area scouts and had to go through workouts in Atlanta, Georgia on June 26 & 27 prior to this event. MLB Network and MLB.com will carry the game live starting at 1:05 CST from Wrigley Field. |

July 22, 2010 Justin Manning, rising senior third baseman, catcher, and right handed pitcher at Holly Springs has made it official. He has announced that he will play his collegiate baseball for Mark Scalf and the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks. As a member of the Cubs program for 3 years this young man has been a hitting machine. This summer he is currently leading the Cubs 17U team with a .528 batting average. His dedication and work ethic is outstanding and we are sure that the Seahawks will be getting a young man that will step in the middle of their lineup and drive in a lot of runs. During the spring of 2010 at Holly Springs, he helped lead the Hawks to a conference championship and into the playoffs with a .350 batting average, 2 homeruns, 24 RBI's and 6 doubles. July 14, 2010 John Allen, rising senior left-handed pitcher at Kerr-Vance Academy has to decided to play his collegiate baseball for Coach Billy Godwin and the East Carolina Pirates. John has been with the Cubs organization for 3 years and is one of the most dedicated, hardest working players to wear the Cubs uniform. Our congratulations to John and his family on his decision. He has the potential to throw 84 to 88 mph fastballs, knee-buckling curve balls and change-ups with pin point accuracy. During the spring of 2010 he helped his Kerr-Vance Academy team win the 2A State Championship. During his junior year John recorded a 9-1 record with 110 strikeouts while posting a 1.13 ERA. He pitched 10 innings in the state finals to help KVA capture the title. May 10, 2010 Josh Frederick, Eastern Wayne senior left-handed pitcher, has committed to play for Coach Carl Lancaster and the Mount Olive College Trojans. Josh pitches consistently in the 84-87 range with his fastball, has a sharp 12 to 6 curve ball and mixes in a nasty change-up. He demonstrates great mound presence and has the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes. During the spring of 2009 he helped Eastern Wayne finish 2nd in the 3A state playoffs. On the mound he is a little bulldog, he finish the year with 75 innings pitched, 1.96 ERA, 21 earned runs, 89 strikeouts, and 41 walks. During this spring he has been hampered with injuries but in 37 innings of work, he has 57 strikeouts, 24 walks, allowed 14 earned runs for an ERA of 2.65. April 23, 2010 Article from News and Observer written by Tim Stevens: Carlos Rodon enhanced his reputation as the area's top high school baseball pitcher Tuesday night with a 2-0 no-hit victory over Panther Creek.
The 6-foot-2, 210 pound Holly Springs junior, who has committed to NC State, struck out 10 and walked four.
"Carlos was a very good pitcher last year, but his control is so much better this season, " Catamounts coach Rod Whitsell said. " He throws hard, has quite a bit of movement on his pitch and has a very good slider. He has very good command of his fastball and slider. He is very effective with those two pitches."
Rodon is 6-0 this season with 74 strikeouts and 17 walks in 40 2/3 innings. He has allowed four earned runs this season for a 0.69 ERA.
"I've got two pitches that I can throw for strikes, and I mix them up some, " Rodon said last week. "I've always been able to throw hard. I have just had that ability."
Rodon said making an early decision to go to State was exciting.
"It is a great school, and I like the coaches there a lot, " he said. "I really like the baseball program." |

April 01, 2010 Mark Peterson, sophomore right handed pitcher at Pitt Community College has decided to play his final two seasons of collegeiate baseball for Coach Joe Raccuin and the Radford University Highlanders. During this spring at Pitt for Coach Tommy Eason he has appeared in 6 games, primarily as a starter, he has compiled a 3-0 record. He has allowed just 19 hits in 25 innings wth 28 strikeouts, 7 walks and fashioned a 2.45 ERA. He handles himself on the mound with great composure and pitches comfortably in upper 80's to 90. He
has very good control and has the ability to locate all of his pitches. Mark was a member of the Carolina Cubs in the summer of 2008 that finished 5th in the World Wood Bat 18U Championship in Marietta, GA. |

October 31, 2009 Cambric Moye, senior catcher at Eastern Wayne High School has decided to play collegiately for Coach Mike Gaski and the UNC Greensboro Spartans. Coach Gaski feels Cambric possesses very good receiving, blocking, and throwing skills and has shown the ability to project as a 3-4-5 hitter with the ability to hit consistantly and drive in runs for the Spartans. He is very polished at handling a pitching staff and shutting down the oppositions running game. During the spring of 2009 Cambric helped Eastern Wayne to finish Runner Up in the 3A State Championship. September 28, 2009 Jonathan Aparicio, 2012 right handed pitcher/infielder/ outfielder from East Wake High School became the first Cubs in the 2012 class to verbal. He has decided to play for Coach Billy Godwin and the East Carolina Pirates. On the mound the 6'3" 190 lb sophomore pitcher has a fastball that is consistently 85-88 with a knee-buckling curve ball and pin point change up. He demonstrates composure far past his age and the ability to deal under pressure. Defensively he has the speed to run balls down in the gaps and with a plus arm the ability to throw out would be runners trying to take extra bases. Offensively he hits with power to all fields and with his 6.9 speed puts pressure on any defense. During the spring of 2009 he batted .408 with 3 homeruns, 4 triples , 6 doubles and 31 RBI's. September 22, 2009 Trevor Kelley, rising junior right handed pitcher/shortstop from Ashley High School became the next Cubs from the 2011 class to announce his college decision. On Tuesday, September 22, 2009 he decided to play his collegiate baseball for Coach Mike Fox and the University of North Carolina Tarheels. This versatile athlete can get it done both at shortstop and on the bump. Offensively he batted .350 with 5 homeruns, 26 runs scored and on the mound he servred as the closer for Ashley. During the summer he helped lead the 16U staff as a reliever and spot starter. Trevor pitches consistently in the 87-91 range with his fastball, has a sharp 12 to 6 curveball and continues to work on a change-up. On the mound his shows great composure and the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes. This young man has the ability to enter a game at any point and shut down the opposing teams offense. August 12, 2009 Joshua Lovick, 2010 catcher/shortstop from Kinston High School verbally committed to Coach Billy Godwin and the East Carolina Pirates. He is a quiet, hard working young man that leads by example. ECU is getting a athletic, versatile player that is a quality person both on and off the field. During the spring of 2009, he led the Kinston Vikings with .590 batting average, 2 home runs, 26 RBI's, 26 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. Joshua not only excels on the field, he is in the prestigious International Baccalaureate program at Kinston, plans to pursue a pre-med degree at ECU and is currently ranked # 3 in his class with a 5.09 GPA. He is the second recent Lenoir County product to play for ECU, sophomore pitcher Sthil Sowers, a North Lenoir alum, and Carolina Cubs alum will be a senior when Lovick suits up for the Pirates in 2011. August 02, 2009 Ryan Cranmer, senior infielder/outfielder from Croatan has been selected by officials for Major League Baseball's Oakland Athletics to represent the A's in the ESPN Area Code Baseball Games August 5-10, 2009 at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. The Code Games which uses wooden bats, features some of the best high school underclassmen in the country. Teams are selected by geographical regions with Ryan representing the southeast regions. He earned the right to represent the A's by preforming well at tryouts held on June 16-17 at Southwest Guilford High School in Greensboro and at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida. Cranmer led Croatan High School this spring with a .569 batting average,9 home runs and scored 31 runs. |

The East Coast Showcase is unique in the fact that the event is run by and the players are selected by Professional Baseball Scouts. The basis of the Showcase is to assemble these elite players on one field that presents a true professional environment. It is a truly great opportunity for both players and the representatives of all thirty Major League Baseball teams to enjoy an event that brings together the most talented amateur players east of the Mississippi River. |

July 31, 2009 The Carolina Cubs won the First Annual Atlantic Coast Prep 16U Baseball Tournament held the weekend of July 24-26, 2009 at the USA Complex and NC State University. The Cubbies played great baseball throughout the weekend with solid pitching, timely hitting, stellar defense and aggressive base-running. In Game 1, the Cubs were led by Rookie Davis at the plate going 2 for 3. Through 7 innings the teams were deadlocked at 4 each. In the 8th inning the Canes walked in the winning run. John Allen pitched well through the first 5 innings with Trevor Kelley pitching the final 2 frames and earning the victory. In game 2, played at NC State the Ohio Warhawks jumped out to a 4 run lead in the top of the 1st. As the Cubs bats struggled the Warhawks continued to play well and making it a short day for the Cubs as the Warhawks won 14-2. In Game 3, the Cubbies had to play back-to-back and maybe the rain delay was what the doctor ordered to wake up the troops. With Travis Long keeping the Richmond Braves in check our bats come alive for 14 hits. Tommy Houmard, Rookie Davis, Dillon Joyner, and Dylan Edwards had 2 hits apiece. By finishing 2nd in our pool we had to open the playoff on Sunday against the On Deck O's from Charlotte winners of pool D. Game 4 would be a pitchers duel between Rookie Davis and Matt Powell from the start. Rookie allowed only 2 hits through 6 innings while the Cubs had several hits but they couldn't push a run across. In the top of the 7th the O's scored 2 runs off an error, 2 walks and 1 hit to take the lead at 2-0. In the bottom of the 7th the Cubs bounced back with 2 runs of their own with 4 hits and a sacrifice to tie the score at 2-2. The O's failed to score in the top of the 8th. In the bottom of the 8th Luis Renvill led off the inning with a double over the right fielders head, Tommy Houmard sacrificed Renvill to third and Justin Manning delivered a line drive over the right fielders head to plate the winning run. Cubs win 3-2. In Game 5, the opponent was the South Charlotte Panthers. The Panthers scored first with a run in the 1st. It didn't take the Cubs long as Dillon Joyner ripped a double in the second and Trevor Kelley followed with a single to tie the score at 1-1. Jonathan Aparicio didn't allow the Panthers any runs through the 5th. In the 3rd the Cubs scored 1 run on a Tommy Houmard scarifice fly to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the 6th the Cubs plated 4 runs with the big hit coming off the bat of Jonathan Aparicio as he hit a triple to score 2 runs. The Panthers did manage to score 3 in the bottom of the inning to cut the score to 6-4 before the game was called for time. Cubs win 6-4 to advance into the championship game against the Ohio Warhawks. This was a great matchup for the championship as numerous colleges were on hand to watch two quality programs do battle. This was a pitchers duel between Trevor Kelley and Brett Boker for 5 innings with neither able to mount any offense. in the top of the 6th the Warhawks scored on a walk and 2 singles. The Cubs bounced back and scored 3 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the inning with Dylan Edwards delivering a big hit to score 2 runs. In the 7th inning the Warhawks scored 1 run and had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out before Rookie Davis ended the threat with a pop up to 1st and a strikeout to end the game. July 30, 2009 Carlos Rodon, rising junior left handed pitcher/first baseman at Holly Springs became the second Carolina Cub from the 2011 class to announce his college decision. On Thursday, July 30, 2009 he decided to play his college baseball for Elliott Avent and North Carolina State Wolfpack. During the spring of 2009, he went 2-1 as a sophomore while logging 40 innings and recording 67 K's. Offensively, he batted .330 with 4 home runs and 30 RBI's. He has the potential throw 84 to 88 mph fastball, sharp 12 to 6 breaking balls and spots the change-up very well. During the summer he helped lead the 16U staff throughout the summer. At the World Wood Bat Tournament in Marietta, Ga he tossed a complete game no-hitter against the New Jersey Mariners in the first round of the playoff. At the NC State Games held at UNC Charlotte he finish second in the home run contest to another Cubbie Chase McDonald. By winning the pool the Cubs advance into the championship field of 32. In Game 1, the Cubs defeated NJ Mariners 5-0 behind a stellar no-hitter by Carlos Rodon and offensively the Cubs were led by Dillon Joyner going big fly for the second time during the tournament. In Game 2, the Cubs defeated Alabama Heat behind the a one-hitter from John Allen and offensively the Cubs were led by Luis Renvill and Justin Manning going 3-3 at the plate. In Game 3, the Cubs came up against a very hot hitting Carolina Cyclones and fell behind early and could only manage 2 runs against the Cyclones. It was an EXCELLENT showing by the Cubs and they showed why they are considered one of the most talented teams in the southeast. Congrats Cubs!! |

June 22, 2009 Chase McDonald, 2010 power hitting first baseman from J H Rose has committed to Coach Billy Godwin and the East Carolina Pirates. The smooth fielding first baseman has an accurate throwing arm and at the plate can hit with power to all fields. During the State Games of North Carolina at UNC Charlotte he won the Homerun Derby by by depositing several shots deep into the night. During the spring of 2009, Chase helped guide the Rampants with a .440 batting average 12 homeruns and 43 RBI's. During February at the Under Armour Showcase held at North Carolina Wesleyan he was selected as the Player of the Week and presented the Mattingly Hitting Award. He has been selected to play in the East Coast Pro Showcase in August in Lakeland, Florida. He has been invited to represent North Carolina and participate in the Power Showcase Event to be held at Tropicana Field in January 2010. In the classroom he carries a 4.0 GPA, member of the National Honor Society and member of the National Latin Honor Society. Jeff pitches in consistently in the 87 to 90 range with his fastball, has a sharp 12 to 6 curveball and change-up. He has the ability to throw all three pitches for strikes and shows great composure on the mound. This spring he is 6-0 with 2 no-hitters in 42 innings of work, 67 strikeouts, allowed 12 hits with 3 earned runs and his ERA is 0.49. Laney High School is currently ranked # 4 in the NCHSAA 4A with a 15-1 record. April 20, 2009 Justin Somers, Laney senior right handed pitcher/outfielder has decided to play his collegiate baseball for Coach Allen Osborne and the Wingate Bulldogs. Justin is a versatile two way player that can handled any outfield position as well as provide depth on the mound. He should be able to go in and make an immediate contribution as a freshman. On the mound he is a bulldog, pitches comfortably in the upper 80's and can hit you with an array of pitches. This spring on the mound he has fashioned a 6-1 record in 32 innings, allowed 12 hits and 6 earned runs while striking out 58 with a 1.30 ERA. February 14, 2009 Austin Blake, junior third baseman/right handed pitcher at Reagan became the 1st Carolina Cub from the 2010 class to announce his college decision. On February 1, 2009 he decided to play his collegiate baseball for Coach Billy Godwin and the East Carolina Pirates. He is a very talented defensive player with versality to play both infield and outfield, posseses arm strength and speed. As a pitcher his fastball consistantly ranges between 85 and 89 and he has a nasty 12/6 breakingball. At the plate he projects as 2 or 3 hole hitter, with the ability to hit with power to all fields. In his first two years at Reagan, Blake helped the Raiders at the plate with a .508 batting average as a freshman and a .450 average as a sophomore. He is ranked 45 out of 405 students in his class with a 4.3 GPA in all honor classes. On Monday he decided to play his collegiate baseball for Coach Billy Godwin and the East Carolina Pirates. In the spring of 2008 he was the only freshman to be selected to the NC Baseball Coaches Association All State Team. Rookie has the potential to throw 84 to 87 mph fastballs, hard 12 to 6 knee-buckling curveballs and pin point change-ups. He is a quiet, hard working young man with great composure. At the plate he projects as a middle-of-the-lineup hitter with the ability to hit with power to all fields. In his freshman season Davis recorded 28 strikeouts and 6 walks in 28 innings while posting a 0.50 ERA. At the plate he helped his Bulldogs with a .493 batting average 3 homeruns and 35 RBI's. December 14, 2008 Congratulations to Fairmont High School senior Michael Bass for being selected as one of six finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. He was honored on December 13 along with the other 5 finalist from across the United States at the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhatten, NY by ESPN.
An infielder, Bass was selected 2008 NC Baseball Coaches Association 2A All State, 2A Southeastern Conference Player-of-the-Year after batting .402 with 35 runs scored, and 2008 State Game participant for Region 4. In additions to baseball, he excels as the quarterback on the football team and handles the point guard spot on the basketball team. In the classroom, Michael is ranked # 1 in his class and carries a 4.5 GPA. Selected twice as Roberson County Student-of-Excellence, president of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Academic Honor Society. He has participated in Relay of Life for 3 years and is active in the Boy Scouts of America. |
